Course Details:

The geotechnical community has studied reliability based design approach for decades. Many excellent published papers and books have addressed this topic and it has progressively been used on an increasing number of projects within most infrastructure segments (transportation, buildings, and energy).  Unfortunately, until the last decade reliability based was not required nor well integrated within mainstream practice. Versions of reliability now are addressed in IBC, AASHTO and many international guides and codes. The introduction of such a significant change to practice does not come easy or transition smoothly.  Concurrent with the increasing emphasis on reliability based design in geotechnical practice there has been a significant increase in the national and international documentation of design, construction and monitoring guidelines, standards and codes which address the minimum Standard of Care for Geotechnical Features.

The primary foundational references for this webinar series are the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Design and Construction Specifications. These references were selected based on: their historical stability (first published in 1931), their regular annual updates and finally their comprehensive scope related to the design and construction of geotechnical features (structural foundations, retaining structures, engineered earthworks).  Although these references were not specifically prepared for other infrastructure industry sectors they can and have been used for projects in energy, rail and buildings internationally.
