The bulkhead collapse of the ferry landing on Hutchinson Island in Savannah, Georgia, on June 18, 2022, caused critical infrastructural challenges. Guoming Lin was called in by the City of Savannah to assist the emergency response. In this presentation, he addresses the role of geotechnical engineers in emergency response as well as the unusual field-measured wall movements and sheet pile deflection, providing especially valuable insights for engineers involved in sheet pile walls. This presentation reconstructs the progressive failure process and emergency response, discuss findings in the investigation, and repair design considerations.
