Practical Approach to Soil Corrosivity Evaluation

This presentation explains what corrosion engineers need to know to develop their corrosion control recommendations for common construction materials used in underground infrastructure to avoid costly future failures. We'll review how to collect soil samples and where to collect soil samples and the significance of various tests.

Ed Hernandez, P.E., CP-2, NACE Certified Corrosion Technologist, of Project X Corrosion Engineering was born in East LA, graduated from Cal Poly Pomona as a mechanical engineer, ended up in Finland obtaining a Masters in Materials Science, married a Finn and learned a few languages along the way, worked as a civil engineer at RBF Consulting, then as a Corrosion Consultant at Schiff Associates, then as a forensic engineer at Vollmer Gray Engineering labs. This strange career path and internships has gained him experience in the fields of corrosion control, positive material identification in the lab or field, soil analysis, water analysis, failure analysis, metallurgy, foundry engineering, and various forensic analysis methods using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FTIR), Microbiologically Induced Corrosion (MIC) testing, Ion Chromatography, and various data logging services to monitor pressure, temperature, strain, current, and humidity for investigations. Ed is passionate about solving problems, educating, building a corrosion engineering community in the Temecula-Murrieta region, and sharing knowledge.
